It’s Frugal Friday: A Thrifting Showcase #3

Posted on by Kahli Posted in Furniture, Thrift Shopping | 2 Comments

Friday couldn’t get here fast enough! For two reasons. Number one, I’m off of work and number two, no work on Monday! For us that just means more time to thrift. Anyway let’s get to this week’s frugal finds..

It’s Frugal Friday: A Thrifting Showcase #2

Posted on by Milla Posted in Furniture, Thrift Shopping | 6 Comments

It’s Friday. Frugal Friday to be exact! Albeit mother nature had it in for the East Coast all week, we found time to check out a couple local thrift stores and Goodwill’s. Some not so local, but we’d drive a little bit of a distance for a good deal. Most if not all things we saw this week we actually purchased. Yes, the temptation got the best of us. We’re so weak.

A Week with The DIY Obsessed and Food Deprived Twins

Posted on by Milla Posted in blog, Thrift Shopping | 4 Comments

So I just realized today is Wednesday. I don’t remember much of Tuesday, except that Kah and I had one meal for the day and that was two Smuckers Uncrustables.

Question of the day:

Why do us crafty DIY folks starve in order to slave over a project?

Perfect example, Kah and I were on vacation from our respective jobs last week and made the most of each day, including painting a dresser, thrifting, painting a large living room and salon suite, and of course starting this blog.  Yay! Here comes the big double but(t)…But I could probably count on one hand the number of times we stopped to eat.

  • Monday: Lazy Monday. We sat in our beds all day until 5:00pm eating a box of Rice Chex without milk.
  • Tuesday: Searched numerous blogs for twinspiration. Much more productive here. We painted Kah’s teal dresser and a pair of night stands for my room (I’ll feature those in an upcoming post). It started raining….productivity cut short. (Can’t even remember what I had to eat here, it most likely wasn’t substantial)
  • Wednesday: Spent time with the godchildren, took them on a thrifty adventure. They really enjoyed it. We stopped at McDonald’s, ate a “healthy” chicken sandwich. Oh and Breeze had a trip  to the vet for his yearly rabies shot. He acted like a complete fool. Seriously, we heard him meow angrily from the waiting room. Maybe because he found out that he had gained two pounds. If he was doing this, he would be a few pounds lighter.

It’s Frugal Friday: A Thrifting Showcase

Posted on by Milla Posted in Furniture, Inspiration, Thrift Shopping | Leave a comment

The past two days we’ve browsed local thrift stores and took pictures of some items that we came across. Much like a local Craigslist feature post It’s Frugal Friday will showcase thrifty finds that we may or may have not purchased. Items that were purchased may show up in future Before & After posts. Yay!  And since we don’t want to become hoarders, items that we like but have no use  for remained at the stores. So maybe if you live locally or not too far you can pick them up.

The Real Deal in Teal?

Posted on by Kahli Posted in Furniture, Inspiration, Thrift Shopping | 1 Comment

A couple of months ago, I decided to make a change to my bedroom. And that change began with buying a dresser. I hadn’t even owned a dresser for the past two years given that I’ve been living out of an organizational system in my closet (thanks Ikea) but I wanted one anyway. There were a few rules I had to follow while on my search for the perfect dresser.

1. It had to be  tall
2. It had to have vintage details
3. It had to be less than $50
3. And most importantly it had to be small

Why did it have to be small, you ask? I hate to tell you this but my room is a box, 10’x10′ to be exact and that’s on a good day. The sacrifices you make when you insist on being a good twin sister.

After searching Craigslist and hitting up a few thrift stores I finally found what I was looking for at an Estate Liquidation. It was tall, had a vintage feel, $50, and small. Check her out below after some stripping and a good sanding.

Double Take: Before & After Armchair

Posted on by Milla Posted in Before & After Projects, DIY, Furniture, Thrift Shopping, Upholstery Projects | 109 Comments

Let me first start off by saying Kah is forcing me kindly asked me to write this post for one of our beautiful furniture re-dos. It was our first time trotting into the territory of furniture upholstering. However, I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t offer my dear sister much help with this project. We (Breeze and I) assisted her with the removal of the old mud-stained  fabric (Kah and a cousin of ours dropped the chair in the mud, while trying to get it in the car). We spent countless days removing staples from the frame. I’m even a little sad to say that we invited my mother and aunt over under false pretenses to help with the staple removal process. I know! Bad twins, but we provided food and movies.

Samaya’s Big Girl Room

Posted on by Kahli Posted in Client Projects, Kids Room Inspiration, Thrift Shopping | 7 Comments

A few months ago, a childhood friend of ours asked if we could decorate her two year old daughter’s bedroom. Of course we said sure yes! We knew that she would be moving into a new apartment and that we’d be starting from scratch.  After the phone call, we headed ran to the thrift store. And boy, did we really hit the jackpot that day; scoring a dresser, headboard, and footboard all in the same trip.

Samaya’s room began with just a mattress and box spring so it needed many pieces to furnish and decorate the room. We had to tap into our creativity to stay under budget while creating a sophisticated bedroom that she could grow up with. That means thrifting, thrifting, and more thrifting!

So without further ado…

Introducing Breeze…The Furniture Inspector (A Thrifty Guide)

Posted on by Milla Posted in blog, Breeze, Furniture, Thrift Shopping | 2 Comments

For us Do-it-yourselfers, there are several must-dos when buying furniture pieces and accessories from a thrift store or your local Goodwill. The most important rule…inspect everything. If it looks really shady, inspect it twice. Get inappropriate with it. Open those drawers! If you remain satisfied and giddy with your new-found treasure, purchase it and take it home.

So now that you’ve squeezed your new dresser or other large furniture piece into your already cramped living space, with all your other incomplete DIY projects, what do you do with it? You guessed it, inspect it again. Yet, we prefer to let an inspector, not of the human variety, do all the gritty work. Here we introduce Breeze…The Furniture Inspector. Read more
